One of the most inventive and imaginative artists working today, began as a solo project for singer and multi-instrumentalist Merrill Garbus. Check out tUnE-yArDs, our World Cafe Guest today! Listen on nprmusic below!
I get asked all the time about what “responsibility” I feel as an artist. This struck me as a great response:
"…when a person chooses to enter into the public forum, then there is some inkling of inherent responsibility. Entertainers who position themselves in the public eye do bear some of the brunt. Celebrities must be mindful of the people who watch them. After all, that’s what they’re paid for. Yes, parents are the first stop for raising their children; but to suggest the media (with its bright colors, big billboards, and billions of dollars used to sell sell sell) has nothing to do with the malleable mind of a child is just ridiculous."
Ahead of tUnE-yArDs’ sold out show at First Avenue, frontwoman Merrill Garbus and the gang stopped by The Current studio to perform tracks off the new record, Nikki Nack . Between songs, Garbus chatted with host Mary Lucia about their recent stormy Glastonbury set, studying Haitian drumming and how the Nikki Nack writing process differed from past records.
Here’s our performance and interview at The Current studio before last night’s show at First Avenue in Minneapolis.
